But DO NOT use human toothpaste - these contain fluoride %26amp; baking soda which can irritate your dogs gastrointestinal tract (%26quot;tummy%26quot;). Dogs (and cats for that matter) don%26#039;t know enough to spit out the toothpaste - they just instinctively swallow it which can cause problems. They have specially made toothpastes for dogs and cats - and they come in a variety of flavors - poultry, vanilla mint, malt, and even beef. Also make sure to use either a pet toothbrush (possibly provided with the toothpaste if you get a kit) or, if you don%26#039;t have one, a baby toothbrush will work as well - you don%26#039;t want to use an adult toothbrush as this can be too hard on your pets gums.

Reply:A lil fluoride should be alright, but NO, dogs cannot use human toothpaste. The reason is as you stated - the dog will not accidentally swallow it, but DEFINITELY will swallow it. Think about it; we humans don%26#039;t even swallow it (and if you do, you%26#039;re not supposed to! Read the package - it warns that small children should be monitored so they don%26#039;t swallow it).

Dog toothpaste is formulated so it is edible as well. Human toothpaste contains harsher chemicals, but we SPIT IT OUT. Consuming human toothpaste is gonna give your doggy one heckuva upset stomach.

After full mouth extractions, an individual is considered edentulous. After the extraction sites have healed, a bony ridge (residual ridge) is left on the maxilla and mandible. Over the course of the person%26#039;s lifetime, the residual ridge will shrink in size (resorption). Although there are many factors that affect the rate of resorption, individuals who wear complete dentures will experience accelerated residual ridge resorption compared to those who do not wear complete dentures.

And it can really be a problem for denture wearers when all the teeth are extracted at an early age. In severe cases the mandible (lower jaw) can become so thin, that it can easily fracture.

So maintain your teeth as long as you can!
Reply:Doc Dave is right. A good portion of the jaw bone is there only to support the teeth. Once the teeth are gone this bone starts to resorb or disappear. After many years the jaw can actually become so thin that it can easily break.

This is the reason that dentures need to be remade or relined every few years. After the teeth are gone, the jaw bone keeps getting smaller so we have to make a denture to fit the new, smaller shape of the jaw.

The moral of this story is:

I work as a maintenance employee at a university residence. Yesterday, while fixing a broken bathroom pipe, I came across a plastic bag with roughly 300 human teeth (I%26#039;m nor exaggerating, the bag weighed at least a pound) in it, roots and all. At first I though that they must be fake, or from some other animal. But, although I%26#039;m no dentist, I know a fair bit about tooth anatomy, and I%26#039;m quite sure they were human. Also, a lot of them had cavities and silver amalgam fillings in them. That%26#039;s enough proof for me.

After the creepiness of the situation passed, I figured that it must have been a dental student%26#039;s room, or possibly a hockey player who liked to keep %26#039;toothy trophies%26#039;.

Are there any dentists out there? How common is this %26quot;tooth collecting%26quot; business? I think it%26#039;s completely disgusting. It also appears that someone took the time to thoroughly clean all the teeth, since none of them had any pulp/nerves attached.

Dental students actually need extracted teeth to practice on. That%26#039;s how they learn how to do root canals and fillings-- on extracted teeth.

I must have gone through 20+ when I was a dental student. We select the appropriate extracted tooth, mount it in the plastic jaw of a mannequin head using a molding compound, then practice doing the root canal or filling on the tooth. An instructor would grade our work.

You don%26#039;t think we would let dental students loose on real patients without letting them practice on something else first, do you? :-D

I assumed that it was left by one of the homeless people who%26#039;d been squatting in the building but it was definitely more than one set of teeth, probably about 75-100. The three most commons systems are the Universal numbering system, the Palmer Notation Method, and the two-digit FDI World Dental Federation notation which is widely used internationally [2]. Dentists sometimes refer to the inner surface of teeth as the lingual surface (meaning towards the tongue), and the outer surface as the labial surface (meaning towards the lips) or %26quot;buccal%26quot; (meaning towards the cheek). Other terms are mesial (toward the midline), distal (away from the midline), occlusal (the top surface), incisal (the cutting surface), %26quot;gingival%26quot; (toward the gumline), and %26quot;pulpal%26quot; (toward the center).

Plaque is a soft white layer which forms on teeth, containing large amounts of bacteria of various types, particularly Streptococcus mutans. Left unchecked for a few days plaque will harden, especially near the gums, forming tartar.

Certain bacteria in the mouth live off the remains of foods, especially sugars. In the absence of oxygen they produce lactic acid, which dissolves the calcium and phosphorus in the enamel in a process known as demineralisation. Enamel demineralisation takes place below the critical pH of about 5.5.

Saliva gradually neutralises the acids which cause the pH of the tooth surface to rise above the critical pH. This causes %26#039;remineralisation%26#039;, the return of the dissolved minerals to the enamel. If there is sufficient time between the intake of foods (two to three hours) then the impact is limited and the teeth can repair themselves.

Caries (Cavities)

Radiographs, or X-rays, can reveal if a person has any cavities and some diseases. Note the fillings (solid white) in this person%26#039;s molars.Caries is a term used to describe the process in which some bacteria produce cavitation of the teeth. This group of bacteria, which are a part of the normal oral flora, have a complex relationship with the host in which they use sugar that the host consumes to metabolize as energy and produce acid which subsequently dissolves the teeth. Caries refers to many, not one, spieces of bacteria including lactobacillus and viridians streptocci, that use ingested carbohydrates for metabolism and produce acid which subsequently dissolves the teeth. Pits and fissures and interproximal smooth surfaces are the most commonly colonized areas of the teeth. Attempts to prevent dental caries involves reducing the factors that cause demineralisation, and increasing the factors leading to remineralisation. Unchecked demineralisation leads to cavities, which may penetrate the underlying dentine to the tooth%26#039;s nerve-rich pulp and lead to toothache.

In moderation, fluoride is known to protect the teeth against cavities. It toughens the teeth by replacing the hydroxyapatite and carbonated hydroxyapatite minerals of which the enamel is made with fluorapatite, which is harder to dissolve by acid. It also reduces the production of acids by bacteria in the mouth by reducing their ability to metabolize sugars. The addition of fluoride (sodium monofluorophosphate) to toothpaste is now very common, and may explain the decline in dental caries in the Western world in the past 76 years.

Some believe that a diet rich in fluorine salts, particularly in childhood, can lead to a stronger enamel which is less susceptible to decay. Fluoridation of drinking water remains a controversial issue. However, in many parts of the world, the natural water supply may be sufficiently rich in fluorides to supply the needs of children without additional sources being required.

Caries is an infectious disease and is treated only by prevention. Once the decay process begins, caries can be eliminated only through the removal of the bacteria. Fluoride can be used to remineralize decalcified enamel, but new tooth structure cannot be regrown. When a patient gets a filling, the dentist mechanically removes the bacterial flora and dead tooth structure and replaces it with a restorative material (metal or glass). This was, traditionally, achieved using gold or a compound of metals called amalgam. Amalgam fillings have been the cause of some public concern because they contain mercury. Modern tooth-colored composite or ceramic are used in addition to traditional amalgam fillings.

As a last resort, teeth affected by caries may be extracted, preferably under local or general anaesthetic. The extracted teeth may be either replaced with a denture or if extracted much before permanent teeth erupts, the space may be maintained by specialized ortho appliances called as Space Maintainers.

Regular brushing is recommended by healthcare professionals twice a day. [3]. Studies show that the minimum required time interval is once every two days; however, more frequent recommended brushing is to help maintain a healthy habit in the population[citation needed]. A mirror may be used to see if the plaque is completely removed during brushing. The actual term %26#039;brushing%26#039; is rather inaccurate. Though a toothbrush is used, it is not designed to deliver mechanical abrasive action. Rather, the surface of the brush is meant to be held at a forty five degree angle to remove plaque from the periodontal margin (the space in between the gum and tooth). Thus, the term %26#039;cleaning teeth%26#039; is far more accurate.

In research, levels of plaque were recorded before and after brushing and found that plaque removal steadily improved as brushing times and pressure were increased. However, their results showed that when people brush for longer than two minutes, at a pressure higher than 150 grams (the weight of an orange), they are not removing any additional plaque, and may be causing permanent damage to the teeth and gums.

Brushing teeth immediately after eating acidic foods is not recommended, because acid softens the enamel, which can then be damaged by brushing. It is better to wait at least half an hour after eating acidic foods before brushing. Rinsing the mouth and eating non-acidic foods can also speed up this process.

Electric toothbrushes are no more effective than the manual variety, according to research. However, %26quot;rotation-oscillation%26quot; electric toothbrushes out-performed manual brushing, removing around 7% more plaque and leading to 17% less gum disease than manual brushes. [4] Any kind of electric toothbrush does tend to help people who are not as good at cleaning their teeth and as a result have had oral hygiene problems.

As noted above, eating certain cheeses such as cheddar soon after eating potentially harmful foods have been noted to be helpful in preventing tooth decay as well.

In the future, tooth decay may be banished by treatment with a genetically modified bacterium, according to research at the University of Florida.

With the permanent teeth, they start to come in at around 6. The 6 year molars, 12 year molars, and 18 year molars (wisdom teeth). This is a general guideline not hard and true but close.

At around 7-8 the front teeth will start to come in, followed by the first premolars at around 9-10, then the canines and second premolars are usually last at about 11-12.

Once all the permanent teeth are in the mouth it is somewhat harder to tell the age of the patient and it depends on a lot of factors. You would have to see what the roots look like, what kind of wear if any, are on the biting surfaces of the teeth. And you can guesstimate how old certain fillings are.

People tooth paste is not good for dogs or cats. It can make them sick. I understand you don%26#039;t want to spend a lot of money so why don%26#039;t you try going to the vet to see what they have to offer in their store. I use CET chews. My cats love them. Apparently they taste good and you can give them to the cat once a day or ever few days. There are also a variety of rinses you can use and there is also the stuff that you put in her water. Pet tooth paste doesn%26#039;t cost that much. Keep in mind that you don%26#039;t have to brush the inside of your cat%26#039;s teeth like we do. Just brusth the out side and you don%26#039;t have to brush them for as long as 2 minutes. A quick wipe is good.

You might want to get your cat%26#039;s teeth looked at by a vet to determine if she has bad teeth. If she has bad teeth, no amount of brushing or rinsing is going to get rid of the bad breath. She will need a dental to help get rid of bad breath. Check with the vet to see if they offer discounts. February is usually dental month for vets and they usually have discounts at that time.

All of the above is information I learned while working for a vet in the last 10 years. Remember, if your cat has bad teeth, the only way to fix the bad breath is by doing a dental. The other stuff is mainly preventative.

He went to the vet and had two teeth removed. (It was $1.00 to remove each tooth but that doesn%26#039;t include the office visit and other expenses!) He contined to have awful breath and began scratching himself on the side of his face. He was treated with antibiotics and sent home. It cleared up but happened again a few months later. Finally, he had to have surgery to have a cyst of some sort removed in that area. The bad breath was cured. It was an internal infection the whole time. Please take your baby to the vet for a check. If money is tight and you are willing to obtain credit, one place to check is carecredit.com. I got a one and a half year old cat and he seems to be biting a lot more lately. It%26#039;s not out of malice (or else I%26#039;d be bleeding), but he does bite on weak points, like my bony ankles. I have tried some negative reinforcements, like smacking him on his thigh to let him know that it hurts. Spray bottle doesn%26#039;t work because my cat%26#039;s %26quot;special%26quot; (not really, I%26#039;m just saying he%26#039;s weird that way lol) and really couldn%26#039;t care any less about mist. So is he teething or is this just something that he does?

Spraying a deterrent on your ankles will most likely not work- you would need to wear it all the time!

It sounds like a behavior issue to me. Make sure he has plenty of outlets with which to play- including with you.

You have to use a pet toothpaste if you use toothpaste on them. But you can also wrap some gauze around a finger and just brush the side teeth with that, it makes it easier to do on some animals.

If you want just a simple reason why you shouldn%26#039;t use human toothpaste on your cat, just put some toothpaste on your finger and offer it to kitty for a sniff test. I have never owned a cat that didn%26#039;t 1) want to know what I was doing when I was brushing my teeth. And 2) that didn%26#039;t wince and pull away when they got a sniff of that minty stuff.

Anyway... here%26#039;s the bigger issue. If your cat%26#039;s teeth are showing plaque build up, or if kitty has bad breath. There%26#039;s no amount of scrubbing you can do yourself to fix the problem. Your vet should take a look. They can clean things and do any dental work (tooth extraction.) This can be very expensive ($200) since they have to anesthetize your cat to do it.
