All i know is that it grown around late teenage ang early 20s.Why do our wisdom tooth serve to us when we entering aduthood?
How do our wisdom teeth play a role in human evolution?
Don%26#039;t know. You could ask the same about the little toe and the appendix. Doesn%26#039;t mean there isn%26#039;t a purpose.
Reply:maybe they r just slow to coming in... or maybe adults eat more veggies than kids....
Reply:Dentists say wisdom teeth are apparently a vestigial organ -- that is, one that isn%26#039;t very useful now but played an important role in the body in eons past. The diets of our prehistoric ancestors contained much more coarse food, which resulted in a larger, more developed jaw with more room for third molars. People also used to lose more permanent teeth at an early age, leaving space for wisdom teeth that would serve as replacements.
%26quot;Some say wisdom teeth are like spare tires,%26quot; says Dr. Louis Rafetto, a Wilmington, Delaware-based oral surgeon who chairs the Third Molar Task Force of the American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons. %26quot;If you lost your teeth, the wisdom teeth would be extra teeth that come in and function like normal teeth.%26quot;

What are the surface areas of the human tooth?
I believe one part is called an occulsion, but what are the names of the other areas of the human tooth called?
What are the surface areas of the human tooth?
enamel..?
Reply:The enamel
Reply:the sides touching the adjacent teeth are known as proximal surfaces, specifically mesial and distal surfaces. other surfaces facing lip and cheek is known as labial and buccal. the surfaces facing toungue is known as lingual and that facing palate is known as palatal.
Reply:There goes the neighborhood. One downfall to Yahoo Answers is that it allows questions to be answered by unwitting responders. Many dental web sites use questions about surfaces of a tooth to allow access to the site. Now they will need to change that strategy.
Reply:If you are talking about layers....the outer is enamel, the middle is dentin and the hollow inner core is your pulp chamber housing your nerve. If you are talking about the surfaces which you chew with, the back teeth are posterior occlusion and your front teeth are anterior incisors which you sheer/bite with.

Why is it that every part of the human body heals itself except for the teeth?
Why don%26#039;t teeth heal like everything else does?
Why is it that every part of the human body heals itself except for the teeth?
Because the cells that make bone and the cells that make enamel are different. The cells that make enamel (amneoblasts) stop building enamel when a tooth is fully developed. Cells that build and repair bone (osteoblasts) are always working. It%26#039;s just biology.
Reply:You%26#039;re wrong. Hair doesn%26#039;t heal either. It replaces itself, just as a tooth does once. Hair continues to replace itself, but once it%26#039;s beyond the scalp, it%26#039;s dead as a door nail.
Reply:Teeth can also %26quot;heal%26quot; to a certain degree.

Do Human Smiles Look Like Threatening Teeth Baring To Dogs?
Yes, to a nervous or aggressive dog. A properly socialized dog will quickly realize that a human%26#039;s smile is friendly. Some dogs will even grin submissively - especially Border collies.
Do Human Smiles Look Like Threatening Teeth Baring To Dogs?
Yes to a strange dog. and don%26#039;t just walk up and pet it on he head
Reply:not if a dog is treated kindly after a smile. they%26#039;ll learn to associate pain or good feeling depending on how they are treated and with what body language.
Reply:WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE TO YOU?
Reply:Yeah, I think I read it somewhere. To make sure they know what it is, you have to vocalize it (smile, laugh aloud or talk to them while smiling).
Reply:No, most dogs are not afraid of someone who smiles. They have the ability to sense when there is danger a lot of the time. The tone of your voice has a lot more to do with whether you are threathing or not.
Reply:Perhaps if the dog is a stranger..but my dogs try to make me smile..some of them smile back...teeth and all...but some just twinkle their eyes..

When we brush our dogs teeth can we use human toothpaste?
Congratulations in taking the first step towards a healthier pet! Brushing your dog%26#039;s teeth is a great thing to do. But DO NOT use human toothpaste - these contain fluoride %26amp; baking soda which can irritate your dogs gastrointestinal tract (%26quot;tummy%26quot;). Dogs (and cats for that matter) don%26#039;t know enough to spit out the toothpaste - they just instinctively swallow it which can cause problems. They have specially made toothpastes for dogs and cats - and they come in a variety of flavors - poultry, vanilla mint, malt, and even beef. Also make sure to use either a pet toothbrush (possibly provided with the toothpaste if you get a kit) or, if you don%26#039;t have one, a baby toothbrush will work as well - you don%26#039;t want to use an adult toothbrush as this can be too hard on your pets gums.

Reply:NO!! If your dog is fed properly he should not need teeth cleaning at all. 80% of dogs have periodontal disease as a direct result of a commercial diet of kibble and canned food. Raw fed dogs have white shiny teeth and no bad breath.
Feed your dog RAW meaty bones - the meat flosses between the teeth and massages the gums while the bones will scrape plaque and tartar off the teeth. This means edible bones like those found in a chicken quarter or a lamb neck NOT those big shin or marrow bones which may crack your dogs teeth.
Make sure that the meal is big enough for the dog to %26#039;work for his dinner%26#039;. This could mean a chicken drumstick or a pork shoulder depending on the size of the dog. RAW bones do not crack or splinter and they are completely digestible by the dog. Never feed cooked bones.

It just depends on the person and what their genetic background is like. There are even some people that have extra teeth, in the dental world we call this supernumerary teeth. All of the above describes an adult dentition. Children have 20 primary or baby teeth.

Does the depart. health and human service help people with bad teeth in texas?
i am needing help to get my husbands teeth fixed, but on low income where can you turn
Does the depart. health and human service help people with bad teeth in texas?
yes, if you are on welfare. They are dental colleges in Texas. I had a friend that got her teeth fixed freeof charge. but, they are dental students and just learning ,but there%26#039;s a real dentist who help them and watch every thing they do at fixing your teeth.
Reply:I think Capital One does a thing called Dental Fee Plan, which is like getting a loan and they loan out a minimum of $1000 and you have 12 months to pay it off in some cases interest free. This could be good to get up to $1000 worth of work done at once (of the most necessary to do first) pay it off and get another loan and go from there, plus this can help your credit rating if you make the required minimum payments monthly and have it paid off in time, it%26#039;s a 2 for 1. I%26#039;d check it out if I were you! GOOD LUCK!

Does the human jaw stop growing before wisdom teeth grow?
Does everyone get wisdom teeth?
Does the human jaw stop growing before wisdom teeth grow?
most people have wisdom teeth, and most have to have them extracted. they are the last teeth to come in, from 16-24 and often come in at strange angles, often pushing on the teeth in front of them causing pain. there are four, at the back of the mouth, and to decide if they are coming in wrong only needs a simple xray.

Can you use human toothpaste to brush a dogs teeth?
i was at the pet store today and they had this lil kit with a toothbursh and toothpaste and stuff for a dog..and the box said it contains Flouride..thats in human toothpaste right?
so is it alright to use human toothpaste? if no, then why???
[other than if the dog accidentlly swallowes some]
Can you use human toothpaste to brush a dogs teeth?
Too much fluride in adult human toothpaste. If you insist on a human product childrens toothpaste is acceptable once a week but doesn%26#039;t give you nearly as good results as pet toothpaste that can be bought everywhere from walmart to the vet%26#039;s office. Good luck and good for you looking out for your dogs dental health!

Reply:A lil fluoride should be alright, but NO, dogs cannot use human toothpaste. The reason is as you stated - the dog will not accidentally swallow it, but DEFINITELY will swallow it. Think about it; we humans don%26#039;t even swallow it (and if you do, you%26#039;re not supposed to! Read the package - it warns that small children should be monitored so they don%26#039;t swallow it).
Dog toothpaste is formulated so it is edible as well. Human toothpaste contains harsher chemicals, but we SPIT IT OUT. Consuming human toothpaste is gonna give your doggy one heckuva upset stomach.
Reply:try to use a baking soda/water mix
put it on a cloth
use you finger to try and clean the teeth
Reply:No! Never use human toothpaste on dogs. Since dogs are not capable of spitting they will swallow the toothpaste and the flouride could cause problems. I never brush my dogs teeth with human toothpaste. I use dog toothpaste, beef flavored, my dog loves it!
Reply:NEVER- apart from dogs don%26#039;t like the taste, it has chemicals that are not good for dogs. there is proper dog toothpaste on the market, normally beef flavored that requires no rinsing, use a babies toothbrush, mind the gums

You shouldn%26#039;t. Dogs can%26#039;t rinse and spit when they brush their teeth, so they can%26#039;t use toothpastes for humans. They sometimes contain bleaches, irritants, and most notably fluoride, which is not good for the stomach. Find a good dog toothpaste that will be safe for your pet to swallow, and a dog toothbrush.

What are the human molars and canine teeth used for? what is their main role?
The canines are sharp, pointed teeth that are used for tearing food. The molars (and premolars) are the ones further back and are used for grinding. And the incisors (the ones on the front) are used mainly for biting.

What happens to human jaws when all teeth are lost? I mean what happens to bones?
give me a link please
What happens to human jaws when all teeth are lost? I mean what happens to bones?
After full mouth extractions, an individual is considered edentulous. After the extraction sites have healed, a bony ridge (residual ridge) is left on the maxilla and mandible. Over the course of the person%26#039;s lifetime, the residual ridge will shrink in size (resorption). Although there are many factors that affect the rate of resorption, individuals who wear complete dentures will experience accelerated residual ridge resorption compared to those who do not wear complete dentures.
Wikipedia has some great information on edentulousness and ridge resorption. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edentulism
You may also be interested in consulting with a local Denturist for more information.
Reply:they are still there =go to Ask.com
Reply:No link, but basically the bones are not affected. The teeth are just missing, make it almost impossible to eat (Including chewing).
Reply:Nothing happens to the bone as the roots of the tooth wrap around the jaw bone.
Reply:Actually, loss of bone usually follows the loss of teeth, especialy when they are all extracted. It%26#039;s called bone resorption.
And it can really be a problem for denture wearers when all the teeth are extracted at an early age. In severe cases the mandible (lower jaw) can become so thin, that it can easily fracture.
So maintain your teeth as long as you can!
Reply:Doc Dave is right. A good portion of the jaw bone is there only to support the teeth. Once the teeth are gone this bone starts to resorb or disappear. After many years the jaw can actually become so thin that it can easily break.
This is the reason that dentures need to be remade or relined every few years. After the teeth are gone, the jaw bone keeps getting smaller so we have to make a denture to fit the new, smaller shape of the jaw.
The moral of this story is:
Keep your teeth as long as you can.
Reply:The docs are right. Have you ever seen a photo of a person who has worn full dentures for many years? Notice how their face looks rather %26quot;shriveled.%26quot; This is because their jaw has (for lack of a better way to say it...) %26quot;shrunken%26quot; because they don%26#039;t have natural teeth.
This is a good reason to think carefully before having teeth extracted.
Can implants help slow down the jawbone loss? I%26#039;m not sure, but that is a good question for a dentist!
Reply:Since you asked for a link, I made this photo for you. You can read the excellent answers above and then look at this for an x-ray showing resorption.

I think i found an old human tooth!?
I think i found an old human tooth when I was diggin for shark teeth at springs in Florida, how can i tell for sure it is a human tooth? it looks almost brown now.
I think i found an old human tooth!?
By it%26#039;s size and shape, the color would turn brownish since the tooth is dead.....or no longer attached with who or what ever it came from.
Additional information: This may be something that you should inform the authorities about. After all there are a lot of missing children, you may have stumbled into to something.
Take it to your dentist, he will be able to tell you if it%26#039;s a humans tooth.
Reply:Keep digging until you find the rest of the body.....(just kidding)
Ask a dentist they will know.
Reply:hello
Reply:Are you sure that is not a shark tooth? They come in those colors and often have a single root showing like a human tooth might.
Off the beach in Venice Florida they have millions of fossilized shark teeth and when you scoop them up you sometimes get ones like that.

Weird human tooth collecting hobby ???
I work as a maintenance employee at a university residence. Yesterday, while fixing a broken bathroom pipe, I came across a plastic bag with roughly 300 human teeth (I%26#039;m nor exaggerating, the bag weighed at least a pound) in it, roots and all. At first I though that they must be fake, or from some other animal. But, although I%26#039;m no dentist, I know a fair bit about tooth anatomy, and I%26#039;m quite sure they were human. Also, a lot of them had cavities and silver amalgam fillings in them. That%26#039;s enough proof for me.
After the creepiness of the situation passed, I figured that it must have been a dental student%26#039;s room, or possibly a hockey player who liked to keep %26#039;toothy trophies%26#039;.
Are there any dentists out there? How common is this %26quot;tooth collecting%26quot; business? I think it%26#039;s completely disgusting. It also appears that someone took the time to thoroughly clean all the teeth, since none of them had any pulp/nerves attached.
Weird human tooth collecting hobby ???
Dental students actually need extracted teeth to practice on. That%26#039;s how they learn how to do root canals and fillings-- on extracted teeth.
I must have gone through 20+ when I was a dental student. We select the appropriate extracted tooth, mount it in the plastic jaw of a mannequin head using a molding compound, then practice doing the root canal or filling on the tooth. An instructor would grade our work.
You don%26#039;t think we would let dental students loose on real patients without letting them practice on something else first, do you? :-D
Reply:that is just disturbing
Reply:I don%26#039;t know how common it is but I found a smaller bag of human teeth about 20 years ago while cleaning out an abandoned building. I assumed that it was left by one of the homeless people who%26#039;d been squatting in the building but it was definitely more than one set of teeth, probably about 75-100. I also worked in a supermarket and a frequent customer kept a couple of her teeth in her change purse. That was really creepy, especially when she dumped one in m hand with her change.

Don't wisdom teeth and the human tailbone prove evolution?
...or do you(christians) still believe the earth is only 6,000yrs old and that we%26#039;re all offspring of 2 people that sinned by eating an apple?
Don%26#039;t wisdom teeth and the human tailbone prove evolution?
And so does this research.
Our genetic link to the great apes has already been illustrated by Ken R. Miller and associates and proven by Hillier et al. We SHARE A COMMON ANCESTOR AND DID NOT COME FROM (emphasis only not yelling) them. This research has been verified by scientists around the world. Have to love those supercomputers for mapping out genomes.
In lay terms, we are “cousins”.
Apes have 48 chromosomes; humans 46. Within our genetic make-up is a FUSED pair of primate chromosomes which accounts for the difference. The line for the great apes has remained because that chromosome pairing has remained UNFUSED.
The genetic marker is on Human chromosome number 2, site base 114,455,823 to 114,455,838.

Since this is true the implications are far reaching. A%26amp;E never happened. Women have been blamed due to gender bias. There’s no original sin, everybody is just fine.
But here’s the most significant implication. Jesus, if he existed, was human (had a biological father) and therefore came from the protosimian line just like the rest of us.

The four third molars or wisdom teeth may be absent, so it is not always 32.

How many teeth does a human normally lose?
32 is the the size of a full set of adult teeth in humans, including wisdom teeth.
BUT: 28 is the number of normal human teeth, not including the third molars (wisdom teeth).
So I guess if you live long enough you can lose all 32

Reply:Humans grow two sets of teeth. The first set (the %26quot;baby,%26quot; %26quot;milk,%26quot; %26quot;primary%26quot; or %26quot;deciduous%26quot; set) appears at about six months of age, although some babies are born with one or more teeth already visible. This stage is known as teething and can be quite painful for an infant. Human children have 20 milk teeth evenly distributed across the mouth%26#039;s quadrants. Each quadrant of five teeth has a:
central incisor
lateral incisor
cuspid (canine)
first molar
second molar
The second, permanent set of 28 teeth appears (erupts) between the ages of 6 and 12 years in the human dentition. The old set is pushed out of the jaw as the new set erupts. The third molars (the wisdom teeth) are the final teeth to erupt, usually around age 20. However, it is common for the wisdom teeth not to erupt at all; this is often the case in small jaws without room to support the extra teeth. It is possible, though rare, for a person to have fourth molars, and there have been instances where fifth molars have been present in the dentition.

central incisor
lateral incisor
cuspid (canine)
first premolar
second premolar

third molar (wisdom teeth)
The permanent set may last for life if cared for properly through a regular program of dental hygiene, including regular brushing and professional cleaning by a dentist or hygienist. Teeth that are susceptible to decay may be sealed for complete prevention.
Teeth are attached to the underlying bone of the jaw via the periodontal ligament, though the teeth themselves are not made of bone. The white part of the tooth, which can be seen in the mouth, is the enamel. Immediately one to three mm below the enamel is a slightly softer, yellow tissue called dentin. Dentin is supported by the pulp (commonly called %26#039;the nerve%26#039;, although it contains many other structures which are not nerves), which lies in the center of the tooth. The teeth%26#039;s composition is specialized to resist the harsh environment of the oral cavity and withstand the large forces imposed upon them by mastication, or chewing.
Dentists use several different notation systems to refer to a specific tooth. The three most commons systems are the Universal numbering system, the Palmer Notation Method, and the two-digit FDI World Dental Federation notation which is widely used internationally [2]. Dentists sometimes refer to the inner surface of teeth as the lingual surface (meaning towards the tongue), and the outer surface as the labial surface (meaning towards the lips) or %26quot;buccal%26quot; (meaning towards the cheek). Other terms are mesial (toward the midline), distal (away from the midline), occlusal (the top surface), incisal (the cutting surface), %26quot;gingival%26quot; (toward the gumline), and %26quot;pulpal%26quot; (toward the center).
Tooth decay
Plaque
Main article: Dental plaque
Plaque is a soft white layer which forms on teeth, containing large amounts of bacteria of various types, particularly Streptococcus mutans. Left unchecked for a few days plaque will harden, especially near the gums, forming tartar.
Certain bacteria in the mouth live off the remains of foods, especially sugars. In the absence of oxygen they produce lactic acid, which dissolves the calcium and phosphorus in the enamel in a process known as demineralisation. Enamel demineralisation takes place below the critical pH of about 5.5.
Saliva gradually neutralises the acids which cause the pH of the tooth surface to rise above the critical pH. This causes %26#039;remineralisation%26#039;, the return of the dissolved minerals to the enamel. If there is sufficient time between the intake of foods (two to three hours) then the impact is limited and the teeth can repair themselves.
Caries (Cavities)
Main article: Dental caries
This section should be merged into Dental caries.
Radiographs, or X-rays, can reveal if a person has any cavities and some diseases. Note the fillings (solid white) in this person%26#039;s molars.Caries is a term used to describe the process in which some bacteria produce cavitation of the teeth. This group of bacteria, which are a part of the normal oral flora, have a complex relationship with the host in which they use sugar that the host consumes to metabolize as energy and produce acid which subsequently dissolves the teeth. Caries refers to many, not one, spieces of bacteria including lactobacillus and viridians streptocci, that use ingested carbohydrates for metabolism and produce acid which subsequently dissolves the teeth. Pits and fissures and interproximal smooth surfaces are the most commonly colonized areas of the teeth. Attempts to prevent dental caries involves reducing the factors that cause demineralisation, and increasing the factors leading to remineralisation. Unchecked demineralisation leads to cavities, which may penetrate the underlying dentine to the tooth%26#039;s nerve-rich pulp and lead to toothache.
In moderation, fluoride is known to protect the teeth against cavities. It toughens the teeth by replacing the hydroxyapatite and carbonated hydroxyapatite minerals of which the enamel is made with fluorapatite, which is harder to dissolve by acid. It also reduces the production of acids by bacteria in the mouth by reducing their ability to metabolize sugars. The addition of fluoride (sodium monofluorophosphate) to toothpaste is now very common, and may explain the decline in dental caries in the Western world in the past 76 years.
Some believe that a diet rich in fluorine salts, particularly in childhood, can lead to a stronger enamel which is less susceptible to decay. Fluoridation of drinking water remains a controversial issue. However, in many parts of the world, the natural water supply may be sufficiently rich in fluorides to supply the needs of children without additional sources being required.
Caries is an infectious disease and is treated only by prevention. Once the decay process begins, caries can be eliminated only through the removal of the bacteria. Fluoride can be used to remineralize decalcified enamel, but new tooth structure cannot be regrown. When a patient gets a filling, the dentist mechanically removes the bacterial flora and dead tooth structure and replaces it with a restorative material (metal or glass). This was, traditionally, achieved using gold or a compound of metals called amalgam. Amalgam fillings have been the cause of some public concern because they contain mercury. Modern tooth-colored composite or ceramic are used in addition to traditional amalgam fillings.
As a last resort, teeth affected by caries may be extracted, preferably under local or general anaesthetic. The extracted teeth may be either replaced with a denture or if extracted much before permanent teeth erupts, the space may be maintained by specialized ortho appliances called as Space Maintainers.
Tooth care
Notice the temporary crown, and that the wisdom teeth have been removed.Main article: oral hygiene
Regular brushing is recommended by healthcare professionals twice a day. [3]. Studies show that the minimum required time interval is once every two days; however, more frequent recommended brushing is to help maintain a healthy habit in the population[citation needed]. A mirror may be used to see if the plaque is completely removed during brushing. The actual term %26#039;brushing%26#039; is rather inaccurate. Though a toothbrush is used, it is not designed to deliver mechanical abrasive action. Rather, the surface of the brush is meant to be held at a forty five degree angle to remove plaque from the periodontal margin (the space in between the gum and tooth). Thus, the term %26#039;cleaning teeth%26#039; is far more accurate.
In research, levels of plaque were recorded before and after brushing and found that plaque removal steadily improved as brushing times and pressure were increased. However, their results showed that when people brush for longer than two minutes, at a pressure higher than 150 grams (the weight of an orange), they are not removing any additional plaque, and may be causing permanent damage to the teeth and gums.
Brushing teeth immediately after eating acidic foods is not recommended, because acid softens the enamel, which can then be damaged by brushing. It is better to wait at least half an hour after eating acidic foods before brushing. Rinsing the mouth and eating non-acidic foods can also speed up this process.
Electric toothbrushes are no more effective than the manual variety, according to research. However, %26quot;rotation-oscillation%26quot; electric toothbrushes out-performed manual brushing, removing around 7% more plaque and leading to 17% less gum disease than manual brushes. [4] Any kind of electric toothbrush does tend to help people who are not as good at cleaning their teeth and as a result have had oral hygiene problems.
As noted above, eating certain cheeses such as cheddar soon after eating potentially harmful foods have been noted to be helpful in preventing tooth decay as well.
In the future, tooth decay may be banished by treatment with a genetically modified bacterium, according to research at the University of Florida.
Dentures and %26quot;false%26quot; teeth
In societies that have high sugar diets, tooth decay can damage teeth badly enough that they need to be removed. This leads to the creation of replacement teeth such as dentures and other tooth replacements.
Some of the earliest artificial teeth were made by the Etruscans and their use was adopted in Ancient Rome for the wealthy citizens who often dined on food containing damaging sugars.

Section of a human molarPermanent teeth are evenly distributed across the mouth%26#039;s quadrants. Each quadrant of eight teeth has a:
central incisor
lateral incisor
cuspid (canine)
first premolar
second premolar

third molar (wisdom teeth)

Not often, but they can also be missing other teeth. It%26#039;s usually the wisdom teeth that are missing, if any at all.
Children have only 20 primary teeth. 10 upper and 10 lower. Children have no %26#039;premolars%26#039;. those are the teeth behind the %26#039;canine%26#039; tooth. They look like little molars.

How many teeth does an average human have?
do 12 year olds have less teeth than a 30 year old supposing they both still have all their teeth.
How many teeth does an average human have?
Short answer: they%26#039;re supposed to, yes, but not necessarily.
Long answer: A child starts out with 24 permanent teeth. Somewhere around age 12, you get another set of molars called the %26quot;12 year molars%26quot; (who%26#039;da thunk :), making 28 teeth total. During the late teens, most people get %26quot;wisdom teeth%26quot;, making the total 32. Some people%26#039;s wisdom teeth never come in. So, if the 12 year old has her 12 year molars and the 30 year old never got his or her wisdom teeth (or had them removed), they have the exact same number of teeth - 28.
Reply:Adults - 32.
Kids - 28
Reply:An average adult has 32 teeth, less than that of a 12 year old
Reply:The average adult human has 32 teeth. A 12 year old would have fewer.
Reply:excluding milk teeth the average human has 32 permenet teeth
if taken care of properly you can still have same amount of teeth as you have at teeneage years
children have 28 teeth as their wisdom teeth dont erupt (brek through) untill their late teens
Reply:no 12 yrs old dont have as may teeth as a full grown adult. usually the wisdom dont errupt till the teens, but it might happen earlier in age and sometimes does. We are given 32 teeth four are wisdom teeth and those dont always errupt in all people either they dont have them or they are too impacted to errupt.

Can you tell the age of a human by their teeth?
Exact age? No. Approximate age? Absolutely.
There are general patterns to tooth eruption. Therefore, looking at someone%26#039;s mouth can give you a reasonable idea of how old they are. This is especially true for children and young adults because you can look at what primary (%26quot;baby%26quot;) and permanent teeth are already in or coming in, and get a good idea of the person%26#039;s age. This is usually called %26quot;dental age%26quot; because of course, there is some individual variation.
Below is a website that shows tooth eruption charts (primary and permanent teeth) as well as other info like x-rays at different ages.

Reply:Yes. You can also cut them in half and count the rings...
Reply:Yes that%26#039;s comes in handy when doing an autopsy report
Reply:yes, approximate.
Reply:yes,
Reply:Yes you can,
Infant teeth come in at 4-6 months, lowers always before the uppers. they fill in from the middle, then the back molars and the canines last.
With the permanent teeth, they start to come in at around 6. The 6 year molars, 12 year molars, and 18 year molars (wisdom teeth). This is a general guideline not hard and true but close.
At around 7-8 the front teeth will start to come in, followed by the first premolars at around 9-10, then the canines and second premolars are usually last at about 11-12.
Once all the permanent teeth are in the mouth it is somewhat harder to tell the age of the patient and it depends on a lot of factors. You would have to see what the roots look like, what kind of wear if any, are on the biting surfaces of the teeth. And you can guesstimate how old certain fillings are.

Bones on the other hand are made of calcified tissue, except during the first few weeks of of pregnancy where your bones are composed of cartilage, then after a few weeks a process called ossification takes place where your cartilagenous tissue is slowly replaced by calcium phosphate. This process of ossification where your bones become more and more calcified is completed around the age of 25. Teeth like bones are composed of calcium, but bones have far more calcium than teeth do. Hope that answers your question.

A human’s tongue helps push food toward the teeth in order to chew it. However most fish simply swallow their food. If this is the case, why do fish have a tongue?

A human’s tongue helps push food toward the teeth in order to chew it. However most fish simply swallow their
It%26#039;s a good question. However, you%26#039;ll probably see the answer more clearly if you re-word it.
Our ancestors were fish-like vertebrates, so their type of immobile tongue %26quot;came first%26quot;. Our mammalian tongue has evolved from there, and adopted new functions, including handling food while chewing; but when you live in water, you don%26#039;t need to %26#039;swallow%26#039; like we do, you simply %26#039;suck %26#039; the food in. This means that the original function of the tongue must have been something else.
The tongue of fish-like vertebrates is much simpler and less mobile than ours (or that of other tetrapods including amphibians, reptiles, many birds, and other mammals). It is basically the ventral part of the second visceral arch (which is homologous with the arches that support the gills), and it is associated to muscles that can move it up and down, helping the water to flow into the mouth and over the gills for breathing.
While they%26#039;re swimming actively, the flow of respiratory water over the gills is not a problem, but when fish are immobile (resting or sleeping), or if they are simply slow-moving species, then the tongue-pumping is essential for them to breathe.
In addition, some fish have actual teeth on their tongue, and they use these to actually %26quot;chew%26quot; their food. This is one of those fish, the %26#039;pirarucĂș%26#039; from the Amazon basin:

Reply:The human tongue also helps push food towards the throat. Same with fish. Plus the tongue aids in keeping food in the mouth so that it is swallowed in portions instead of all at once, thus helping to prevent blockage.
Reply:guides the food down the throat. Without a tongue, the mouth creates no pressure to force the food into the stomach.
Reply:You%26#039;re wrong. The purpose of a tongue is to push the bolus towards the back of the throat to be swallowed, not to push it towards the teeth. Thus, that is not the case. Fish probably have tongues for the same reasons we do; to taste and to swallow.

Did you ever clean or remove a hook from a bullhead, carp, walleye, perch, etc.? Never saw a tongue on any of these.
Reply:Just because it isnt pushing food anywhere doesnt mean it doesnt have taste buds. If you cannot taste your food it becomes hard to recognize what is good or bad. You could ingest some poisonous snacks and not even know it until it is to late!

Is It Safe To Brush My Dog's Teeth With Human Toothpaste?
Hello dog lovers,
My kid the Domberman is almost 3 years old. I was wondering if it%26#039;s safe for him to use my toothpaste (Colgate)?
I thank you for your time
Is It Safe To Brush My Dog%26#039;s Teeth With Human Toothpaste?
No, it is not.. a veterinarian answered that question a few hours ago, and she said certainly not safe..You can get doggy toothpaste at any pet supply, and they like it better, too..
Since i began feeding Canidae, even my old dog%26#039;s teeth are sparkling white.. I can%26#039;t believe it!
Here is the link to the answer by a veterinarian%26gt; http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
Reply:yes if he likes it, if not get a flavored one for animals
Reply:You should really invest in a dog toothpaste they are not expensive %26amp; they usually come w a toothbrush made specially for your pooch. Normally Im not against using people items on my animals w safety percautions but if you read on the toothpaste box %26amp; or label it says that it is not safe to swallow even by humans %26amp; that even children should be monitored when using %26amp; that is any significant amount IS swallowed that poison control should be called. So being that your pooch is for sure going to swallow %26amp; eat the paste then its certain that is could cause problems!! Be safe %26amp; keep your pooches best interest in mind %26amp; just pick up some pet toothpaste, they like the flavor, its no rinse, so less mess %26amp; its safe for them to swallow!! BEST OF LUCK!!!
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t recommend it. Toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed and states that on the package. It would be hard if not impossible to teach your dog to brush and spit.
Why don%26#039;t you call a vet%26#039;s office in your area and inquire if there is an animal toothpaste?
Thank you for checking to make sure. You are a responsible pet owner. Good for you!
Reply:Definately not. Because human toothpaste has floride and such in it, and it is already unsafe for us to swallow that, and dogs don%26#039;t know any better. Just spend the extra couple of bucks to go ahead and get him some doggy toothpaste, he%26#039;ll like the taste of that better anyway.
Reply:Dogs don%26#039;t like minty-fresh breath! They like liver and chicken. It is not safe for your dog to be brushed with our toothpaste. You have a lot of good answers here! It%26#039;s great to see that you care about your dogs oral health!
Reply:If it is Crest, yes :-)
Reply:NO!!! It%26#039;s not safe at all. Most human toothpastes contain an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Buy some doggy toothpaste at a petstore.
Reply:Yes and it is actually a good thing to do. Dogs teeth can decay just like humans and if your dog lets you brush its teeth then go for it. It will save you money in the long run and plus your dogs teeth will be healthier.
Reply:NO dog toothpaste only - you could seriously hurt your dog with human toothpaste.
Reply:Not really, no!!

Would it hurt my cat to brush her teeth with human toothpaste? If so, how can I freshen her breath without $$?
People tooth paste is not good for dogs or cats. It can make them sick. I understand you don%26#039;t want to spend a lot of money so why don%26#039;t you try going to the vet to see what they have to offer in their store. I use CET chews. My cats love them. Apparently they taste good and you can give them to the cat once a day or ever few days. There are also a variety of rinses you can use and there is also the stuff that you put in her water. Pet tooth paste doesn%26#039;t cost that much. Keep in mind that you don%26#039;t have to brush the inside of your cat%26#039;s teeth like we do. Just brusth the out side and you don%26#039;t have to brush them for as long as 2 minutes. A quick wipe is good.
You might want to get your cat%26#039;s teeth looked at by a vet to determine if she has bad teeth. If she has bad teeth, no amount of brushing or rinsing is going to get rid of the bad breath. She will need a dental to help get rid of bad breath. Check with the vet to see if they offer discounts. February is usually dental month for vets and they usually have discounts at that time.
All of the above is information I learned while working for a vet in the last 10 years. Remember, if your cat has bad teeth, the only way to fix the bad breath is by doing a dental. The other stuff is mainly preventative.
Good luck!
Would it hurt my cat to brush her teeth with human toothpaste? If so, how can I freshen her breath without $$?
yeah it would hurt them.. but try a different cat food. maybe that will help
Reply:No because human toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed which what animals will do. Your cat probably needs a dental cleaning by a vet to truly get rid of the smell. It has to be done every few years. Without it, gum disease may cause tooth loss and a great deal of pain.
Reply:Your cat can%26#039;t spit out human toothpaste, don%26#039;t use it. Can you get a little finger type brush into her mouth? She may have tooth decay building up which leads to pain and problems with the gums. Call animal rescue groups, you should be able to get phone numbers from the vet. You will get great advice!
Reply:Don%26#039;t do it, it will make your cat froth at the mouth something chronic, they%26#039;ll hate it!!
You need to get her teeth checked by a vet. 95% of the time, bad breath is a sign of dental problems. Hope money isn%26#039;t too much of a problem, because dental work isn%26#039;t cheap - but if your cat needs it, he needs it!!
If the cat has dental problems, there isn%26#039;t anything you can do at home to help. Measures like hard biscuits and brushing, or breath mints, are all preventative measures to STOP dental problems occuring, they%26#039;re not cures. So go the vet - if your cat%26#039;s teeth need work, obviously you have to get it sorted.

Reply:You can try brushing with a wet toothbrush, no paste. However, cats with bad breath usually have some kind of other problem. I have a cat that used to have awful breath. He went to the vet and had two teeth removed. (It was $1.00 to remove each tooth but that doesn%26#039;t include the office visit and other expenses!) He contined to have awful breath and began scratching himself on the side of his face. He was treated with antibiotics and sent home. It cleared up but happened again a few months later. Finally, he had to have surgery to have a cyst of some sort removed in that area. The bad breath was cured. It was an internal infection the whole time. Please take your baby to the vet for a check. If money is tight and you are willing to obtain credit, one place to check is carecredit.com. It is a credit card that can only be used for medical expenses and is accepted by a lot of people doctors as well as vets. Its a handy thing to have in case of emergencies too. Good Luck!

yes, my dog loses them on her chew toys
Do puppies loose their teeth like human babies do?
Yes they do, somewhere between the age of 4 and 6 months.
Reply:Most puppies and kittens begin losing their baby teeth or deciduous teeth at 3 to 4 months of age and they have generally lost all of them by the time they%26#039;re 6 months old. You may find one or two, more than likely in the food dish, or after playing with chew toys.

Reply:Yes they do! All puppies change their teeth like humans do. When my dog was a pup her teeth would just fall out %26amp; sometimes you can see a double tooth, one ontop of the other since the old one hasn%26#039;t fallen out yet.
Reply:Yes, they do. You will find the teeth, after they fall out, in chew toys, or on the floor. However, unlike humans, I am sure there is no tooth fairy for the puppies....
Reply:Yes they do when they are about 4-6 months of age, when the baby teeth fall out the original teeth are there.

Do cats teeth like human infants?
I got a one and a half year old cat and he seems to be biting a lot more lately. It%26#039;s not out of malice (or else I%26#039;d be bleeding), but he does bite on weak points, like my bony ankles. I have tried some negative reinforcements, like smacking him on his thigh to let him know that it hurts. Spray bottle doesn%26#039;t work because my cat%26#039;s %26quot;special%26quot; (not really, I%26#039;m just saying he%26#039;s weird that way lol) and really couldn%26#039;t care any less about mist. So is he teething or is this just something that he does?
Do cats teeth like human infants?
He is not teething anymore- he should have all of his adult teeth by now.
And negative reinforcement does NOT WORK. Positive reinforcment does, however. So please try that. Tell him firmly %26#039;no!%26#039; when bites you, but praise him so (very!) much when he doesn%26#039;t bite. It will work so much better.
Spraying a deterrent on your ankles will most likely not work- you would need to wear it all the time!
It sounds like a behavior issue to me. Make sure he has plenty of outlets with which to play- including with you.
Reply:He%26#039;s playing. He thinks it%26#039;s fun because of your reaction.
I know it sounds crazy, but spay some bitter apple on your ankles. Cats hate it, and he will eventually forget about your ankles.
One of my cats started biting the tip of my nose while I was asleep. OUCH.
She seemed to think it was great fun.
Reply:they do, but not at that age. cats should have their adult teeth about 6 months of age. he might be having a dental problem, but he is definitely not teething
Reply:the cat is either playing with you or he telling you to stop touching him.
Reply:cats do teeth like humans and lose there baby teeth. just get him some chewy toys which he can play with however it just sounds like he is maturing more and trying to find his place in the pecking order of the house you just gotta stay on top and show him whos boss

Reply:I know this one well %26#039;cause I use to be a patient of this very old dentist and everytime he got me %26quot;in the chair%26quot; he would tell me %26quot; I have all 32 of my teeth %26quot; and I had to listen to this for years. lol--he was so proud that he still had all his teeth and wanted to tell me about it every chance he got and me being a teenager I did not want this old man talking to me period. He intimidated me for some reason.
Reply:Humans have 32 teeth if you%26#039;re inluding your wisdom teeth, but only 28 without. Some people are born with only some or none of their wisdom teeth, so it really depends on the person.
Reply:32 if you have your wisdom teeth too..if you don%26#039;t have them yet...then 28...
Reply:Actually, the human body has 52 teeth. There are 20 deciduous (baby) teeth and 32 permanent teeth.
Reply:32 Teeth. Attached is a link that shows the name of each tooth.

Why do only human beinghave milk teeth ?
Other mammals also have milk teeth.
Reply:a human baby is taken cared by a elder person which can give it food in the form of paste by using mixer grinder, but animals cannot do this %26amp;they have to eat raw marerial which needs strong teeth.
Reply:They aren%26#039;t. Dogs, cats, and many other mammals have baby teeth.
Not really a physics question, BTW.
Reply:nope.. animals do too. I have all of my dog%26#039;s baby teeth that fell out.
