Would it hurt my cat to brush her teeth with human toothpaste? If so, how can I freshen her breath without $$?

People tooth paste is not good for dogs or cats. It can make them sick. I understand you don%26#039;t want to spend a lot of money so why don%26#039;t you try going to the vet to see what they have to offer in their store. I use CET chews. My cats love them. Apparently they taste good and you can give them to the cat once a day or ever few days. There are also a variety of rinses you can use and there is also the stuff that you put in her water. Pet tooth paste doesn%26#039;t cost that much. Keep in mind that you don%26#039;t have to brush the inside of your cat%26#039;s teeth like we do. Just brusth the out side and you don%26#039;t have to brush them for as long as 2 minutes. A quick wipe is good.

You might want to get your cat%26#039;s teeth looked at by a vet to determine if she has bad teeth. If she has bad teeth, no amount of brushing or rinsing is going to get rid of the bad breath. She will need a dental to help get rid of bad breath. Check with the vet to see if they offer discounts. February is usually dental month for vets and they usually have discounts at that time.

All of the above is information I learned while working for a vet in the last 10 years. Remember, if your cat has bad teeth, the only way to fix the bad breath is by doing a dental. The other stuff is mainly preventative.

Good luck!

yeah it would hurt them.. but try a different cat food. maybe that will help
Reply:No because human toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed which what animals will do. Your cat probably needs a dental cleaning by a vet to truly get rid of the smell. It has to be done every few years. Without it, gum disease may cause tooth loss and a great deal of pain.
Reply:Your cat can%26#039;t spit out human toothpaste, don%26#039;t use it. Can you get a little finger type brush into her mouth? She may have tooth decay building up which leads to pain and problems with the gums. Call animal rescue groups, you should be able to get phone numbers from the vet. You will get great advice!
Reply:Don%26#039;t do it, it will make your cat froth at the mouth something chronic, they%26#039;ll hate it!!

You need to get her teeth checked by a vet. 95% of the time, bad breath is a sign of dental problems. Hope money isn%26#039;t too much of a problem, because dental work isn%26#039;t cheap - but if your cat needs it, he needs it!!

If the cat has dental problems, there isn%26#039;t anything you can do at home to help. Measures like hard biscuits and brushing, or breath mints, are all preventative measures to STOP dental problems occuring, they%26#039;re not cures. So go the vet - if your cat%26#039;s teeth need work, obviously you have to get it sorted.

Reply:You can try brushing with a wet toothbrush, no paste. However, cats with bad breath usually have some kind of other problem. I have a cat that used to have awful breath. He went to the vet and had two teeth removed. (It was $1.00 to remove each tooth but that doesn%26#039;t include the office visit and other expenses!) He contined to have awful breath and began scratching himself on the side of his face. He was treated with antibiotics and sent home. It cleared up but happened again a few months later. Finally, he had to have surgery to have a cyst of some sort removed in that area. The bad breath was cured. It was an internal infection the whole time. Please take your baby to the vet for a check. If money is tight and you are willing to obtain credit, one place to check is carecredit.com. It is a credit card that can only be used for medical expenses and is accepted by a lot of people doctors as well as vets. Its a handy thing to have in case of emergencies too. Good Luck!
